Happy New Year (or Not)
The New Year is upon us and we have all heard many wishes of Happy New Year! We’ve wished it many times for others and we are all hoping and even praying it will turn out to be this way, right? Well, what happens to these wishes and thoughts of happiness as the month rolls on by and the good feelings of the holidays are a distant and waning memory? Is having a Happy Year something we even think about? For many people, happiness is not top of mind. Instead, we focus on the day to day drudgery, a busy schedule and often just making it through to tomorrow. Happiness is not only not a major focus for us it is often not even on our radar. So if it’s not on our radar how can it happen? The short answer is: it can’t.
To Be Happy, You Must Desire Happiness
and Cultivate It From Within
The hard truth is that no one else can make you happy and you can’t make anyone else happy either. Sure, we all have some affect on the moods of others, but the emotion anyone feels lies solely within their own power. The people you see walking around in a perpetual state of happiness have made a conscious decision to be that way; and those who are walking around in a state of misery simply did not make the same conscious choice. In fact, many of these miserable people didn’t make any conscious choice at all and are simply going around ‘unconsciously unhappy’. They may not even be aware that they have a choice in front of them and instead have allowed themselves to slide into a state of unwanted, yet undeniably unsexy and unhappy misery.
And then there are those who live right in the middle: Not necessarily un-happy and not necessarily truly happy either. I am guessing that there are more people in this category than any other and I see evidence of this in the type of responses I hear when I ask, “How are you?” Often, they say “Hanging in there”, “OK”, “Fine”, “Alright” or “So-So”. Funny how so few words can say so much.
Get on the Happiness Highway
I challenge you to get out of the middle of the road and opt for the fast lane on the Happiness Highway. Yes, there is a fast lane! There is one thing for you to do…
1) Decide to be happy
Look for the good in every situation, person and thing around you. You can always see the good, the right and the happy – if you’re looking for it. Use the word "happy" whenever you have a chance no matter what is happening around you. Insert it into your conversation, “I am happy to see you (even if it’s only on the holidays)”, “I am happy to have my family here (even though they can be a handful)”, “I am happy to wake up today (even though I could use a few more hours sleep)”, I am happy I have a job (even if I don’t love my boss)”. This will bring the awareness of happiness to you in each and every moment and soon you will begin to truly feel the feelings of happiness too! The really cool and beautiful thing is that when you feel the happy, others feel it too!
Happiness is a choice and it’s contagious. Pass it on!

Healing Crisis: Can it be good? |

Many years ago I was in a meditation ashram relishing my favorite spiritual practice: chanting devotional Sanskrit hymns. The mantras, syllables and even theragas, or melodies, were designed to purify the body, mind and spirit. My first spiritual teacher then asked everyone what they experienced and the answers were: “light, bliss, peace”, etc. Finally one brave soul raised her hand and said “I feel terribly agitated.” The guru was delighted and said “YES—that is VERY GOOD!”
Far from relishing in someone’s suffering, the teacher went on to explain that the very pure vibrations of the chant will work deeply on breaking up any denser energies, any less-than-happy thoughts and feelings and begin to clean out the closets, so to speak. A very good thing indeed, but it can be a very unpleasant, and misunderstood, process.
The same is true with energy healing. Most people will experience very pleasant sensations like warmth, tingling, peace, lightness, calm, happy, energy, hope and pain relief. Some will not notice anything, but may later find they feel very rested and refreshed. My mom was like this. She rarely felt anything in the moment of receiving Reiki but went into a deep sleep and always awoke feeling better.
Yet a handful of people may have what is called a “Healing Crisis”, experiencing very strong unpleasant feelings and sensations, like dizziness, nausea, extreme fatigue, intense pressure, strong emotions, headaches, even pain. It is not common but when it happens I feel just like my teacher: “Very good!!” Because I know that the energy is working on a causal level to bring up to the surface an old pattern, repressed emotion, old injury or illness process, and assist in releasing it. I also know that the person is going to feel VERY changed when something this intense happens.
For example, in my recent Global Distant Healing, one woman, new to energy healing, wrote that she felt sick with a very strong headache and that she had to be still or it worsened. She felt actually “knocked out” by the energy and in “some other place.” It was disturbing her, until the next day when she awoke:
“This is like a totally new place for me. I feel new, I feel changed. When old fear thoughts come in, it is so much easier to let them go. I feel aligned and more expansive. I really am amazed.”
I have never experienced someone remaining in this type of intense agitated place for very long. As a matter of fact, the more intense it is, the greater the shift afterwards. So it may seem strange, but I get very excited when a client experiences a Healing Crisis.
What is Healing Crisis (aka Herxheimer Reaction)
In the holistic health worldview, a healing crisis is seen as not only natural but necessary. In the article “Understanding Healing Crisis” Ginger Chalford, Ph.D writes: “The body has an inherent desire for perfect health… the body must go through an elimination process to achieve good health. The elimination process is often referred to as the “healing crisis…also known as the Herxheimer Reaction which occurs when the body is detoxifying too rapidly and toxins are being released faster than the body can eliminate them. A healing crisis can result from any holistic/natural therapy such as homeopathy, naturopathy, improved diet, etc.” I would of course insert here the Usui System of Natural Healing or Reiki.
“In a healing crisis”, Dr. Chalford continues, “every body system works together to eliminate waste products and set the stage for regeneration. Old tissues are replaced with new. A disease occurs when the body cannot make it through its natural healing crises for one reason or another. The body is “locked” into a destructive and shut down place, physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.”
While the symptoms of the healing crisis may at first be similar to the problem or disease it is meant to heal, there is an important distinction: elimination or release. A cleansing, purifying process is underway and stored wastes are in a free-flowing state. The body, mind, and spirit are no longer “locked.” Sometimes pain and symptoms are re-experienced during the healing crisis but it is temporary and on the way to being released or “healed”.
Reiki energy healing always works on the causal level to shift imbalance and dis-harmony and may bring to the surface past physical injuries, conditions and personal issues so that one can heal their unfinished business. And Yes, as my guru would say, “that is VERY GOOD.”

Positive Affirmations and Other Powerful Techniques for Achieving Small Business Success

I'm fascinated by how our brains work, and the incredible power that our thoughts have in helping us to bring to life those things that we most desire.
I'm also a little bit terrified of it all, if I'm being honest.
Because if I have the ability to create something out of nothing merely by the thoughts that I think, then I need to be extra vigilant about the quality of those thoughts.
You know, just to make sure that what I'm bringing in is in alignment with what I actually want. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once observed, "A man is what he thinks about all day long."
That's a tremendous responsibility, don't you think?
Positive affirmations are a great way to "train your brain" to think the kinds of thoughts that produce the sort of results you're looking for (whether that's small business success, a loving relationship, financial freedom, or whatever it is you are wanting to manifest), but they're just a starting point.
In fact, if you want lasting small business success, it's important to get to a point where you're not attaching too much importance to your thoughts at all, and instead are feeling your way through life.
Let me explain.
Most of the thoughts that we think aren't really our own. In fact, they've been passed along to us from our family, our society, teachers, and those we spend our days with.
Over time, for better or for worse, these thoughts become beliefs that we operate by, often without even being aware of it.
Once we become aware of this fact, we tend to take an analytical approach to changing these thoughts, which, if you've ever tried it, is like whistling in the wind. Put your attention on a negative belief you'd just as soon be done with, and what do you think about?
That negative belief.
Lather, rinse, repeat, and you see why it's very difficult for us to root out thoughts and beliefs that don't serve us.
When we instead choose to feel our way through any given situation, we move away from the thinking brain and its conditioned thought processes and beliefs, and instead tune our internal radio dial to another frequency where we can "know without knowing" what step to take next as we move towards our goal.
If you're frustrated with the practice of positive affirmations and want to bring about real change in 2012, try sitting in silence at least once a day. Follow your breath, or the beating of your heart, and when thoughts come up, as they will, watch them float in your consciousness like they were bubbles on a summer day. Don't judge them as good or bad; just observe. As you do, you'll notice that your thoughts are actually neutral - neither good or bad, just thoughts - until you assign them a value.
Better still, once you can observe your thoughts and let them go, you'll begin to trust your feelings and intuition, as well as the inspiration that comes when we turn off the mind chatter (even if that chatter consists of positive affirmations) and tune into the silence.
Try this practice of silent observation for one week, and see what happens. You might be surprised to see that the small business success, or any other good thing that you desire, is just a heartbeat away.
