How to Move Out of Overwhelm and Get Things Done With Ease in Your Business and Life
By Leslie Cunningham
Going into overwhelm, self-doubt, feeling unmotivated, getting distracted and telling ourselves that we are powerless when it comes to having enough time is one of the biggest and most common mistakes women entrepreneur’s make when it comes to building their business.
These are two common complaints I hear from many women entrepreneurs…
In my heart of hearts I know I’m capable of bringing in good money and making a difference to my clients but on a practical daily basis I doubt myself and my ability to create great money.
I can easily fill my days doing busy work for my business and in the end avoid putting myself out there in a bigger way…”
“When I think of everything I have to do in my business I get overwhelmed and easily side tracked - and before I know it another day has come and gone. There just aren’t enough hours in the day to accomplish everything that I know I should!”
The problem is that an overwhelmed mind isn’t able to take effective action, or takes inconsistent action at best. To make matters worse if we feel like we’re constantly racing against the clock we’ll feel stress and anxious and we won’t come from a true place of inspiration and creativity when it comes to marketing, connecting with prospects and building our business.
Unfortunately many women entrepreneurs feel resentful because while they are working hard, they have little to show for it in terms of dollars in the door.
They mistakenly believe that the solution is to just work harder and do more.
But this only creates more frustration, internal pressure and overwhelm. They feel resigned to working in a way that doesn’t match their personality or natural work style.
When we hold a future that is grim it often follows we become resigned, unmotivated and stuck in thinking that nothing we do will really make a difference.
Conversely, it’s when we hold a future of possibility that is exciting to us and we allow our feelings and emotions to be there without resisting them that we naturally transform back to motivated action. This is true power.
You must be willing to call to mind in your moments of self-doubt and work-load overwhelm that every situation is an opportunity to hold an internal conversation of possibility – REGARDLESS of the circumstances that you find yourself in.
The key is to keep your attitude from being shaped by your circumstances and instead have it be determined only by YOU – REGARDLESS of your external circumstance.
James Allen, the author of “As a Man Thinketh” has a wonderful quote in his book, “Circumstances do not make a man, they reveal him.” On the opposite side of every challenge lies the opportunity for huge breakthroughs and even greater growth as the authors of our own lives.
I remember coaching a client who was struggling with attracting more prospects and feeling overwhelmed and crunched for time.
I asked her if she would be willing to take the position that she wasn’t actually “at the effect of” her day and her to do list, but instead was actually in the drivers seat – and that she had a big say in terms of what actually got accomplished during her work day.
I instructed her to pause, close her eyes and ask herself “What do I want to create now?” whenever she felt stressed and overwhelmed.
She came back just a week later and reported amazing results… “I realized that regardless of what happened during my work day, I could always return to consciously choosing which business task I would focus on next instead of blindly reacting to unexpected interruptions like phone calls, tasks that took longer than anticipated or unexpected emergencies, and allowing them to throw me into negativity and overwhelm.
Now when things come up that I didn’t plan or anticipate I know I have the opportunity to reconnect with my ultimate vision and desired outcomes for the day simply by asking myself, “What do I want to create now?”
When we are willing to get back into the drivers seat when it comes to how we manage our time, miracles will seemingly occur in our business before our very eyes. Not only that, but we’ll get more things done from a place of ease instead of anxiety and pressure!
